Sinéad O’Connor
Dublin, 2019
In 2019, while wearing my songwriter’s hat, I got a phone call from Sinéad O’Connor’s manager, asking if I would like to open for her on her then, forthcoming Irish tour. It was around the time that someone had played a prank on our own John Banville (The Sea), telling him he’d won the Nobel Prize for literature, when in fact he had not. So, when the phone call came in, as you might imagine, I was ever so slightly suspicious of the caller’s true intent. But lo and behold it all checked out, so off I went to take part in one of many high points of my career. I got to open for her at six dates, which meant I also got to see her perform for six nights, yes, I know! Here are a couple of my favourite shots I took of her during one of our Dublin dates at Vicar Street. I think the side profile capture some of her fiery spirit quite well, and the one of her smiling, perhaps her humility and gratitude. An unforgettable experience.
